Lea Grant’s piano-driven compositions are characterized by fantastically synesthetic lyrics, jazzy harmonic progressions, catchy melodies and above all, a gorgeous, crystal pure voice. Her songwriting & performance style conjures and synthesizes the pretty-cuteness of Regina Spektor with the musical depth & complexity of Joni Mitchell. Her approach to songwriting is very much colored by her classical training. The arrangements are lush and orchestral sounding, often featuring clarinetist Morgan Nilsen (Cradle Duende) and violist Naomi Hartman (Resonance.)
The title track of her debut EP, "Earthbound" has been featured on KALW's VoiceBox, hosted by Chloe Veltman. The track, "Gravity Always Wins" was recently used in an advertisement for the new ipad app, "SoundBox" and was also chosen as a finalist in the Cocktails w/Patrick Breaks the Band contest on Sirius 111 and XM 162 in 2009.
Lea Grant earned her B.A. in Music at UC Santa Cruz in 2004. At Santa Cruz, her primary emphasis was opera. She continued classical training for several years after college, performing with SF Lyric Opera, Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir and International Orange Chorale, where she has been a featured soloist. In 2006 her focus began to shift towards songwriting and performing her own compositions. She has spent the last few years playing shows throughout the bay area and her hometown, Los Angeles, writing up a storm, and in summer of 2009, recording her debut EP, Earthbound, which was released last February.
She is currently working on her first full length album, which (with your help!) will be released in spring 2012. Many of the songs deal with themes of letting go, rewriting the scripts we were raised to repeat, and transcending the obsolete versions of ourselves. And of course romance, always romance!
